IQNA – Syrian calligrapher Ubaidah Muhammad Salih Al-Banki described having the opportunity to calligraphy a Mus’haf as a divine blessing and a great source of honor.

Mus’haf is an Arabic word for a codex or collection of sheets, but also refers to a written copy of the Quran. 

Al-Ubaidi calligraphed Mus’haf Qatar, which was published in 2010. So far more than 700,000 of the Mus’haf have been printed.

He told Al Jazeera that calligraphy of a Mus’haf is a dream of every Muslim calligrapher and that he is very happy God made his dream come true.

In order to write the verses of the Quran, a calligrapher should purify his soul from conceit, arrogance, and the like, he said.

Al-Ubaidi was chosen for the task after attending an international calligraphy contest.

The event, held in 2001 attracted about 120 of the most skilled calligraphers in the Islamic world who competed to win the honor of writing before an international jury formed from experts in the arts of Arabic calligraphy.

In January 2007, Doha was on a date with another chapter of this project, represented by the arbitration panel meeting to choose the winning version after a period of review, auditing and comparison between the two works according to purely scientific and objective criteria that required that the names of the two calligraphers be withheld from the authority so that the selection would be accurate, honest and far for any subjective factors, to announce the winning version of the first place for al-Banki, on January 20, 2007, in the presence of all members of the jury, and media outlets.

Al-Banki spent 2.5 years for writing the Mus’haf in Qatar, which was then taken to Egypt for proofreading and then to Istanbul, Turkey for printing.
