IQNA – The Punchbowl Mosque, in Sydney's south-west, has garnered international acclaim, being recognized in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) international awards for excellence.

Completed in 2019, the mosque has not only been a recipient of the Sulman Medal but is now also a finalist for RIBA's biennial grand prize, which celebrates the world's most transformative new buildings.

The winner is set to be announced this coming November.

The mosque's design, a brainchild of Sydney architect Angelo Candalepas, features exposed concrete and a series of domes that resonate with the traditional elements of Muslim architecture.

It took nearly two decades for the project to receive the green light from the Canterbury Bankstown council, The Guardian reported on Tuesday.

RIBA has lauded the Punchbowl Mosque as "a profoundly moving sacred space," seamlessly integrated into the fabric of a residential suburb. Despite the building’s entirely modern use of material and its formal and spatial manipulation, “Punchbowl mosque nevertheless seems to take its place confidently within the tradition of Muslim architecture,” the judges said.
