Deputy Governor of Mecca, Prince Saud bin Meshal, led the ceremony on behalf of Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz. The event included perfuming the interior of the Kaaba with incense, oud oils, and other fragrances.

The ceremony typically involves washing the floor and walls of the Kaaba with Zamzam water mixed with musk and rose water perfumes.

This mixture was prepared by the Presidency for Religious Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, according to Saudi TV Al Ekhbariya.

The Presidency stated that the tradition of scenting and washing the Kaaba and the Grand Mosque follows a Sunna practice of the Prophet Muhammad.

The ceremony was attended by Muslim foreign diplomats and heads of Umrah pilgrimage missions.

Earlier this month, the annual ritual of changing the kiswa, or covering cloth of the Kaaba, was performed on the first day of the new Islamic lunar Hijri year.
