The Lebanese resistance movement in a message on Wednesday described Haniyeh as one of the great contemporary leaders of resistance who courageously stood against the US domination project and the Zionist occupation.

“We share with our brothers in the Hamas movement the sadness for the loss of this great leader and the anger against the enemy,” the message read.

“We are proud that our movements’ leaders are leading the way in the endeavor (to fight the enemy) until martyrdom.”

Haniyeh has been assassinated in an attack in Tehran in what Hamas described as a "Zionist raid."

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced on Wednesday morning that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed when their residence was struck in Tehran.

The statement indicated that the attack is under investigation, with results expected to be announced later in the day.

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

“We affirm our cohesion with our brothers in the Hamas movement in resisting the usurping entity.”

Mohammad al-Hindi, the Islamic Jihad’s deputy secretary general, also described Haniyeh’s assassination as a “great loss” for the Palestinian nation, but insisted that the Israeli enemy was “completely mistaken” if it thought it could defeat the resistance by taking out its leaders.

Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, echoed the condemnations, describing the assassinations as a “cowardly action” and a “dangerous development.”
