Samir Antar was reciting the Quran at a mourning service when his cell phone rang. He stopped the recitation and answered his phone before resuming the recitation.
The move has sparked a backlash with many on social media criticizing the qari.
Sheikh Mohamed Hashad, head of the Association of Quran Reciters, has also expressed his strong displeasure at the move and summoned Antar.
He said what the qari did was not appropriate given the sublime status of the Quran.
He added that the ethical committee of the association will investigate the issue and take disciplinary measures against the qari.
Last year, Hisham Antar, the son of Samir who is also a qari, was criticized and summoned by the association for performing what looked like dancing while reciting the Quran.
A final decision in his case is going to be announced by the association later this month.
Meanwhile, a number of Egyptian Quran reciters have recently been suspended or banned for making mistakes while reciting the Holy Book.
