“We are working to present the Quran in sign language for our deaf brothers, and the initial Surahs (chapters) of the Quran have already been prepared in sign language,” Youcef Belmehdi said, An-Nahar reported.
He made the remarks on the sidelines of a national seminar on strengthening the national and religious identity of Algeria.
He highlighted the measures taken by the ministry for individuals with special needs and for promotion of religious teachings in society and said the printing of “Arbaeen Nawawi” (a collection of hadiths considered authoritative by Sunni Muslims) has begun, and the books “Fiqh Mukhtasar by Imam Khudari Al-Jazairi” and “Al-Mukhtasar fi Al-Ibadat” are in the process of being printed.
Belmehdi also noted that the number of Quran students in Quranic schools and Zawayas (traditional Quranic centers) in Algeria has reached 1.2 million, and that the number increases during the summer holidays.
