Listening and Imitation: Key Methods for Teaching the Quran to Younger Generation

Speaking to IQNA, Seyyed Mehdi Seif said that listening to and imitating the recitation of skilled qaris are influential ways for learning the art of recitation.

“We are witnessing the emergence of new talents in Quranic recitation among young people. With the right structures in place, many of these talents are being nurtured through targeted programs aimed at developing Quranic skills, paving the way for their future excellence in recitation,” said Seif, a veteran in Quranic instruction.

He elaborated that the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet (PBUH) and the Ahl al-Bayt (AS) provide clear guidance on effective educational approaches.

“One of the most prominent methods is listening to and following the recitations of well-known Quranic masters. This involves repeated exposure to expert recitations and emulating their styles and techniques,” Seif explained.

Pointing to the importance of this method, he cited the Quranic verse, “So when We recite it, follow its recitation” (Surah Qiyamah: 18).

He noted that educators should adapt these traditional methods to suit the tastes and preferences of contemporary learners, ensuring relevance across different times and contexts.

When asked about fostering enthusiasm for Quran recitation among children and teenagers, Seif responded, “A logical and sensible approach naturally generates interest. As the saying goes, 'If a teacher's lesson is infused with affection, even the most reluctant child will eagerly attend school.' This reflects a deeper truth found in Quranic teachings and traditions, indicating that positive outcomes are inevitable when we apply these principles effectively.”
