IQNA – The management of a 168-year-old mosque in Meerut has started dismantling the structure to accommodate the city's Metro and Rapid Rail Corridor projects.

The mosque, situated outside Jagdish Mandap on Sharda Road, had been identified as an obstacle to ongoing infrastructure expansion, The Pioneer reported on Saturday.

For the first time, Friday prayers were not held at the mosque after its gate was removed and electricity disconnected.

The decision to voluntarily take down the mosque followed discussions between local authorities and the mosque committee.

On Thursday night, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) City Brijesh Kumar Singh, along with National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) officials, met with the mosque's Imam and management committee.

Authorities emphasized the importance of clearing the site to expedite construction work, urging a mutual resolution. As a result, the mosque committee agreed to proceed with dismantling the structure on Friday.

Haji Swale Heen, representing the mosque committee, stated: "We received a notice regarding the mosque. The Mutawalli (caretaker) is unwell, but we were informed that the mosque would need to be removed, either voluntarily or through administrative action. We decided to dismantle it ourselves."

He also highlighted the mosque’s historical significance dating back to 1857 and appealed to the authorities for an alternative site for reconstruction.
