IQNA – A dedicated "Adhan Room" for reciting the Islamic call to prayer in the ears of newborns has been inaugurated at Razavi Hospital in Mashhad.

The opening ceremony took place in the presence of the custodian of Astan Quds Razavi

Dr. Mohsen Mehvar, CEO of Razavi Hospital, highlighted that despite the deep-rooted tradition of reciting the adhan (call to prayer) and iqama (second call before prayer) in the ears of newborns, this practice has largely been overlooked in medical facilities across the country.

"In response to the emphasis placed by the esteemed custodian of Astan Quds Razavi and in line with the observance of Islamic traditions, this initiative has been launched at our hospital for the first time in Iran’s healthcare sector," he stated.

During the inauguration, Ayatollah Ahmad Marvi, custodian of Astan Quds Razavi, personally recited the adhan and iqama in the ears of five newborns at the hospital.

Mehvar expressed hope that the launch of the Adhan Room would serve as a model for other medical institutions in the country.

Reciting the adhan in the right ear and the iqama in the left ear of a newborn is a well-established Islamic tradition believed to introduce the child to faith from the moment of birth.

This practice, rooted in prophetic teachings, is meant to spiritually welcome the baby into the world and provide a sense of calm.

It is widely observed by Muslim families globally and is considered a way to instill the first words a child hears as those of devotion and monotheism.
