IQNA – The former president of Al-Azhar University said the Quran highlights the Islamic identity of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

A forum on Al-Aqsa Mosque in Quran held in Egypt in April 2025

Speaking at the weekly meeting of the Al-Azhar Mosque this week, Ibrahim al-Hudhud said that Surah Al-Isra begins with the mention of Al-Aqsa Mosque and this indicates that the mosque is an inseparable part of the identity of the Islamic Ummah.

The name of Al-Aqsa Mosque in the Quran, as some people think, does not only appear in Surah Al-Isra, but also in a number of other Surhas, including Al-Baqarah, Al Imran, Al-Aaraf, Al-Qassas, Muminun and Qaaf, he stated.

The holy city of al-Quds will be the gathering place of the people on the Day of Resurrection and the place where the creation will be resurrected on that day, al-Hudhud said.

He added that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) underlined the virtue of Al-Aqsa Mosque and ordered Muslims to go to this mosque and said, “If someone lights a lamp in it, it is as if he has prayed in it.”

The scholar also noted that the Quran does not attribute this mosque to the Jews.

Salah Ashur was another scholar addressing the meeting. He dismissed the Zionist occupiers’ attempts to destroy Al-Aqsa Mosque under the pretext of finding the Temple of Solomon and said such attempts are covers to judaize the mosque and desecrate it.

He added that al-Quds and Palestine will remain Arab, no matter how long the hostilities last and no matter how the enemy occupier tries to distort history.
