IQNA – A seminar on the creation of mountains from the perspective of the Quran was held at Al-Azhar Grand Mosque in Cairo, Egypt.

Al-Azhar Grand Mosque in Cairo, Egypt hosted a seminar on the creation of mountains from the perspective of the Quran (May 18, 2025)

It took place on Sunday and was attended by experts and researchers on the miracles of the Holy Quran.

Al-Azhar scholars Abdul Fattah al-Awari and Mustafa Ibrahim addressed the seminar.

Mountains have a close connection with the Earth and play a vital role in maintaining its balance and stability, al-Awari said.

He added that mountains are a sign of God’s power and a testament to His magnificent creation.

“No human being, whoever they may be, can create such a masterpiece. The role of mountains in preserving the Earth’s balance will continue until the Day of Resurrection.”

He referred to Verse 105 of Surah Taha, “(Muhammad), they will ask you about the mountains. Tell them, ‘My Lord will grind them to powder (on the Day of Resurrection)’”, saying God Almighty will uproot the mountains and leave nothing of them on the Day of Judgment, so that the earth will be leveled and nothing will remain upon it.

Emphasizing the importance of deep reflection on the Quranic verses about mountains, he said this contemplation reveals the greatness of the Creator and His astonishing power in creating the universe.

“Mountains are not merely barren lands. Rather, they are clear signs and solid evidence of God’s creation,” he went on to say.

Mustafa Ibrahim said the Quran refers to mountains in various ways, mentioning them 48 times across different Surahs.

The word ‘mountain’ appears in the plural form 31 times and in the singular form 4 times in the Quran, he noted.

He added that the Quran does not limit itself to the word “al-jibal” when describing mountains, but it also uses other terms and names such as “al-rawasi”, which appears 9 times in the Quran, to describe mountains, highlighting their stability, strength, and role in stabilizing the earth.

He also mentioned Verse 79 of Surah Al-Anbiya, “We made the mountains and birds glorify the Lord along with David,” saying It indicates that these inanimate objects are not deaf or devoid of sensation and perception; rather, they are creatures that glorify their Lord in a manner that the Almighty God knows best.
