The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, on Monday condemned the act of terrorism.
The Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack that a United Nations mission says killed at least 43 worshippers during a night mass at a church in eastern DRC.
“Slaughtering people in a house of worship is nothing short of pure evil,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
“We condemn this despicable attack and pray that God grants solace to the survivors and the loved ones of those killed.”
The attack, which took place at the church in Ituri province’s Komanda city on Sunday, saw members of the Daesh-affiliated Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) killing people with guns and machetes, and taking captives.
Daesh said on its Telegram channel that rebels had killed some 45 churchgoers and burned dozens of homes and shops.
The UN mission known as MONUSCO said at least 43 people had been killed, including 19 women and nine children, and condemned the attack.
