IQNA – A member of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Egypt said one of the greatest wonders of the Holy Quran is the phenomenon of multiple meanings in a single word.

Sheikh Khaled al-Jundi, a member of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Egypt

Sheikh Khaled al-Jundi noted that this unique feature demonstrates the profound linguistic miracle of the Quran and the complete mastery of the Arabic language in which it was revealed.

Stating that the Arabic language allows a single word to contain multiple meanings, he emphasized that words in the Arabic language have the ability to carry different meanings without harming their overall meaning or structure and context, something that does not exist in any other language with such abundance and richness.

He added that this semantic diversity requires precision and attention in interpreting the verses of the Holy Quran, because it is not appropriate to interpret a word in a meaning that is inconsistent with the context in which it appears.

He noted that this phenomenon is not merely a linguistic miracle, but rather a call to ponder and reflect on the meanings of the Quran and enjoy the rhetorical beauty of the verses.

“Why don’t we enjoy this uniqueness of rhetoric? Why don’t we give our children the opportunity to experience linguistic understanding through the Quran? This provides intellectual and spiritual pleasure and advanced education in the Arabic language at its most beautiful.”

Approaching the meanings of Quranic words, such as the verb “Ittakhkhiz” (take), reveals an amazing rhetorical richness, he said.

Ittakhkhiz is completely different in meaning and context from “akhz” (to take), he said, noting that while the latter indicates physical attachment and attraction, the former indicates habit or persistence in an action.

He emphasized that the Holy Quran uses each word with great precision and in accordance with the place and context.

He added that the scientific and linguistic interpretation of the words of the Quran in books such as Al-Kashaf, Al-Qurtubi, Al-Tabari and Ruh Al-Ma’ani reveals a multitude of hidden meanings that reveal an endless miracle.

The scholar called on those who discuss the interpretation of the Quran or extract rulings from it to act thoughtfully and carefully and to test themselves before delving into the meanings of the verses without knowledge.

He further emphasized that teaching the Arabic language through the Holy Quran is not limited to learning the grammar and syntax, but in addition to earning rewards, it also includes improving the level of rhetoric, linguistic and spiritual taste, because, according to Hadith, each letter of the Quran is equivalent to 10 good deeds, and if the good deeds are many, then it is more appropriate that the meanings are also many.
