Maldives Reports Growth in Quran Memorization As Number Of Huffaz Rises

IQNA – The Maldives now counts more than 280 certified Quran memorizers, with over 1,500 others currently in Quran memorization programs, according to the country’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

The ministry said in a message to local media that 284 people in the island nation have completed memorization of the Quran. Most of them trained at the state-run Quran Center and other religious institutes, The Edition reported on Tuesday.

Islamic Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed noted that an additional 50 memorizers are expected to graduate during Ramadan.

He also confirmed that President Mohamed Muizzu will present awards and medals to Quran memorizers on the 27th night of the holy month.

The government recently increased the monthly allowance for hafiz from 2,000 Maldivian Rufiyaa (about 130 USD) to 4,000 Rufiyaa, with payments already underway.

The Maldives is a small Indian Ocean archipelago of about half a million people, almost all of whom are Muslim. Quran memorization is regarded as a key part of religious education in the country, with state institutions supporting training and recognition for those who complete the process.
