Syrian news media have published reports suggesting that a death sentence has been issued for the former grand mufti, according to Arabi 21.

These media reported that Hassoun, who was arrested a few months ago, has been sentenced to death along with some other officials of the former government.

However, Mazhar Abdul Rahman al-Wais, the minister of justice in the new Syrian government, denied these rumors and said in a statement that Hassoun’s case is still in the judiciary and has been transferred from the ministry of justice to the investigating judge in the ministry of interior.

“If the judge finds Hassoun guilty according to the law, he will issue a verdict and refer the case to the judge, and if he acquits him, he will be released,” he stated.

Following press statements by Sheikh Badreddine Hassoun’s son about his father’s deteriorating health, al-Wais said that Hassoun is in perfect health and is being monitored in prison.

Last August, the Syrian ministry of justice released excerpts from the investigations of prominent figures in the former government, including Sheikh Badreddine Hassoun, Brigadier General Atef Najib (former head of the political security branch), Mohammed al-Shaar (former interior minister), and Major General Ibrahim Hawija (former head of the Air Force Intelligence Directorate).

The investigating judge accused Hassoun of “incitement, complicity, and participation in murder”.
