The University of Nizwa in Oman has completed the manuscript of six chapters of the Holy Quran; a scientific and cultural project that, upon completion, will be added to Oman’s religious and cultural heritage as a valuable work, the Oman Daily reported.

The project, which is expected to last two years, is being carried out by the University of Nizwa under the supervision of the ministry of awqaf and religious affairs of Oman, and demonstrates the university’s commitment to serving the Quran and preserving the art of authentic Arabic calligraphy through the “Zukhruf” calligraphy workshop.

Ali Mazed, head of the Zukhruf calligraphy workshop who is responsible for the transcription of this Quran, said the idea of a handwritten Quran as one of the unique projects of the University of Nizwa was proposed some time ago through the Zukhruf calligraphy workshop.

This project was warmly welcomed and greatly supported by the university administration, because it is one of the outstanding achievements of the workshop and an incentive to continue working and being creative in this field, he said.

Through this project, the university intends to turn the Quran into a valuable scientific and cultural work for its library, and this work is considered an important religious and cultural project, he stated.

Mazed explained about the calligraphy style chosen to transcribe this Quran, saying detailed colors and special Islamic motifs were chosen for the outer frame of the Quran, and the script used is the Naskh script, because it is one of the clearest and easiest scripts to read and the most common script used to write and read copies of the Quran.

Regarding the timeframe for the completion of the project, he said given the high level of precision and constant focus on writing and standardizing the verses according to the established principles, the work on this project is expected to take two full years.

He further said that by the grace of God, six parts of the Quran have been completed so far, and the work is progressing smoothly without any significant challenges or problems.

He also stated that the university students’ participation has been limited to the preliminary aspects of the project, namely drawing lines and ensuring the accuracy of spacing on the papers used to write the Holy Quran.

The project supervisor emphasized that this participation has provided a valuable educational opportunity for students interested in Arabic calligraphy, and will help increase their skills and understanding of the correct principles of writing, while adhering to the exacting standards required for writing the Holy Quran.
