The Iraqi Islamic Resistance confirmed that it brought down a KC‑135 aerial refueling aircraft belonging to the US military in western Iraq, the Middle East News reported.

In its statement, the group emphasized that it had targeted and destroyed the KC‑135 using “an appropriate weapon.”

The statement described the downing of the American aircraft as a defense of Iraq’s sovereignty and airspace, and as a response to the violations committed by occupation aircraft in Iraqi skies.

The US military had previously reported the crash of a tanker aircraft in western Iraq, noting that a second tanker involved in the incident landed safely in occupied Palestine.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed that the cause of the crash was neither enemy fire nor friendly fire.
