15th Int’l Ghadir Week Begins in Najaf

IQNA – The Astan (custodianship) of Imam Ali (AS) holy shrine in Najaf, Iraq, on Sunday announced the start of the activities of the 15th International Ghadir Week.

The programs and activities are implemented with the participation of 27 countries with the aim of consolidating the values ​​of unity and justice, the Astan said, the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.

The holy city will host dozens of Quranic and cultural events and the largest street theater performance with a capacity of 5,000 spectators during the International Ghadir Week.

The Ghadir flag will be raised in about 150 locations and gatherings inside and outside Iraq during the week, the Astan noted.

Haider Rahim, head of the media department of the Astan, said in a press conference today that the International Ghadir Week is the most prominent religious and cultural event that the Astan is holding on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.

The aim of this event is to establish the values ​​of Wilayat (guardianship), unity, justice, and connection with the life of Imam Ali (AS) through various religious, cultural, artistic, popular, and service programs, he stated.

He said the Ghadir Flag Raising Project will witness its greatest expansion this year since its founding, noting that the number of flag raising locations has increased from about 90 in previous years to nearly 150 this year.

He noted that the countries participating in the event include the UK, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Finland, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Romania, the Czech Republic, France, Austria, Iran, India, Pakistan, Australia, Lebanon, Thailand, Turkey, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, China, Kenya, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Egypt.

The event of Ghadir, or Eid al-Ghadir is celebrated by Shia Muslims around the world every year.

It is among important feasts and happy holidays of Shia Muslims held on the 18th day of Dhul Hijjah in the lunar Hijri calendar, which falls on Thursday, June 4, this year.

Ghadir was the day when according to reports, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) as his caliph and the Imam after himself following an order from God.
