IQNA – A Polish radio program recently examined the long history of Muslims’ presence in the country.

Radio Bialystok has decided to take an unprecedented approach to present a rarely heard narrative to Polish listeners about the story of a community that has preserved its faith and culture for more than six centuries, while at the same time becoming an integral part of the Polish national identity.

This media coverage reflects a significant shift in public discourse in Poland. Islam is no longer seen simply as a topic related to immigration or minorities, but as a historical and cultural component that has played a role in shaping the country's history. This gives the Muslim community a new platform for interaction through knowledge, history and dialogue.

Radio Bialystok dedicated a new episode of its historical podcast “Secrets of Our Time” to answering a central question: can a person preserve their faith and traditions and at the same time become part of another nation?

The episode featured Artur Konopatski, a historian at the University of Bialystok and head of the Podlaskie regional branch of the Union of Tatars of the Republic of Poland, in a discussion of the historical experience of Tatar Muslims who have lived in Poland for more than six centuries.

The program examined the history of Tatar mosques in the Podlaskie region, rare Islamic manuscripts, and social and religious customs that Muslims have preserved from generation to generation. It also examined the role of Muslims in Polish society and how they successfully reconciled the preservation of the Islamic faith with their national identity within Poland.

The discussion emphasized that the Tatar experience represents a unique model of coexistence, where the preservation of religious identity is not an obstacle to participation in public life, but has become part of the cultural diversity that Poland is proud of today.

The significance of this program lies in its production by an official Polish media outlet, which demonstrates a growing interest in presenting Islam from a scholarly and historical perspective, going beyond stereotypes and highlighting the contribution of Muslims to Polish national history and culture.

This type of program is an important step towards fostering mutual understanding and giving the Polish people the opportunity to get to know the reality of the Muslim community through history and academic research, rather than through prejudice.

The number of Muslims in Poland is estimated at around 40,000 out of a total population of approximately 37.5 million, which is less than 0.1% of the population.

Polish Tatars are the oldest part of the country’s Muslim community, having settled in the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth since the 14th century. They still maintain their mosques, heritage, and religious and cultural institutions to this day.
