
The court sent Mehedi Hasan to jail Friday in a case filed over the alleged burning of copies of Tafsir (interpretation) of the Quran in the Dhaka University area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir passed the order following a petition filed by police, Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Shah Alam said.
Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Nazmul Hasan of Shahbagh Police Station, produced the accused before the court and sought his detention.
No lawyer appeared on behalf of the accused during the hearing.
According to the case document, some people detained the accused when he allegedly set fire to three volumes of Tafhimul Quran at the Raju Sculpture area of the Dhaka University campus at around 1am on Thursday (9 July).
Later, police arrived at the scene and took the accused into custody. Following the incident, Sub-Inspector Kamal Uddin Mia filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station, accusing the youth of hurting religious sentiments.
