Historic Funeral of Martyred Leader Opens New Chapter in Tehran–Baghdad Relations: Iran Envoy
Al-Sadeq described the processions as an "unprecedented and irreplaceable epic," saying millions of Iraqis took part in the events.
Citing official figures, he said around 3.8 million people attended the procession in Najaf, while 6 to 7 million participated in Karbala, making Iraqi officials' estimate of approximately 10 million participants credible.
The ambassador said Iraqis from all walks including tribal leaders, religious scholars, lawmakers, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens strongly supported hosting the processions , adding that many mourners waited overnight to participate.
Al-Sadeq also praised the Iraqi government, particularly Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi for organizing the event and ensuring security through a special committee established for the occasion.
He said the presence of senior religious authorities and scholars from both Qom and Najaf highlighted the unity between the two major Islamic seminaries.
According to the ambassador, the official reception at Najaf International Airport, attended by the Iraqi prime minister, senior political figures, ministers, members of parliament, resistance leaders, tribal chiefs, and representatives of religious and ethnic communities, reflected Iraq's respect for the martyred Iranian leader.
Al-Sadeq said the ceremonies demonstrated the deep religious, cultural, and historical ties between Iran and Iraq, attributing the massive public turnout to both the Iraqi people's affection for the late leader and his longstanding support for Iraq's independence and sovereignty.
He added that the funeral procession symbolized the unity and solidarity of the two nations and "opened a new chapter" in bilateral relations that could pave the way for closer cooperation and stronger ties between Tehran and Baghdad in the future.
