Pilgrims Start Arbaeen March from Basra to Karbala
The Basra province in southern Iraq is witnessing the departure of a large number of Arbaeen pilgrims on foot from a distance of more than 530 kilometers to the holy city of Karbala, Shafaqna reported.
Moukebs (service stations) have been set up on the roads leading to Karbala, providing various services to the pilgrims, including food, drinks, resting places, prayer places, and lodging and health facilities.
Tens of thousands of pilgrims are taking part in the procession, moving from the center of Basra to the areas of Al-Kazizah, Karma Ali and Al-Haritha.
This Arbaeen pilgrimage is accompanied by extensive security measures with various security and intelligence forces deployed along the route leading to Dhi Qar province and other connecting roads.
Significant efforts have also been made by the municipality to collect the thousands of tons of food and beverage waste produced by approximately 3,500 Moukebs.

Arbaeen is a religious event observed by Shia Muslims on the fortieth day after the Day of Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the third Shia imam.
It is one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world, with millions of Shia Muslims, as well as many Sunnis and followers of other religions, walking to Karbala from various cities in Iraq and neighboring countries. This year, the day of Arbaeen will fall on August 4.
