This is according to French Muslim scholar Christien (Yahya) Bono who made the remark while addressing a forum titled “Islam and Shia Studies in French Academci Circles”.
He said the Zionists’ prejudiced approach to Islamic studies and their ill intentions still continue today.
He stated that the two words Islamology and orientalism no longer have any function in the modern world and that they were inaccurately used in the past.
“The word orient is not a geographical term (when used in orientalism) but it is an ideological concept in that whatever ran against the will of certain European countries was regarded as orient.
“The word Islamologue cannot be used any longer, either because no one can claim to have mastery over the culture, history, politics and economics of an Islamic country or an entire Islamic period. Therefore, one can have Islamic studies in several fields but this does not mean he is an Islamologue.”
Bono referred to Islamic studies in the current century, saying that in the modern era, studies about the eats and Islam has developed rapidly but a great deal of these studies are carried out with a prejudiced approach.
He said there are three main groups (among non-Muslims) who have conducted studies on Islam, Laics (seculars) and Christians, Jews, and military researchers.
According to Bono, Laics do not advocate any religion and are actually against all faiths and, thus, anti-religious content is obvious in their studies.
“There are some in this group whose research is done impartially but the majority of them are against Christianity, Islam, and all other religions.”
He said among Christians, too, there are some who really want to know Islam but others try to reject Islam and introduce Christianity as the superior religion.
Bono said the Zionist Jews started studies on Islam after the Second World War with a fully biased approach.
He added that the third group comprised military scholars who entered Muslim countries during the colonial era. “They were not biased in their studies and recorded their observations precisely.”
Elsewhere in his address, Bono pointed to Shia studies in the West and said many Western scholars have learned about Shiism through Sunni books instead of referring to Shia sources and that is why they mostly lack a true knowledge of this school of thought.
