Bahrain’s Shia Islamic Scholars Council issued a statement on the start of month of Muharram.

The council said the month of Muharram and the day of Ashura (tenth day of Muharram) are occasions in which to foster the culture of fraternity, self-sacrifice, virtue and solidarity, the council’s website reported.

It said Muharram is a month of holding fast to the rope of God and resorting to the Thaqalayn (Book of God and Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS)).

“These two are a Divine guarantee (for Muslims) to stay away from deviation, division, discord, and tension.”

The statement also said that the nation of Bahrain is among nations that follow the messages of Karbala and Ashura.

“In the days of Muharram this year, we invite all the devotees of Imam Hussein (AS), especially the great scholars and preachers to focus on the culture of unity whose pillars are holding fast to the rope of God”.

Every year, in the month of Muharram (the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar), the world’s Shias, as well as some members of other schools of thought and other faiths, mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

The Imam (AS) and his companions were martyred in the Battle of Karbala in the year 61 after Hijra (680 A.D.).
