It has been jointly organized by the Islam World Society, Indonesia’s Religious Affairs Ministry and Sharifullah Hidaya University, Al-Arab daily reported.
400 scholars, university instructors, researchers and media activists are attending the three-day event whose motto is “Media and Social Responsibility”.
The conference discusses issues like “Global Media, Ethical Dimensions”, as well as the relation between the media and society, and challenges and opportunities facing the media in Muslim societies.
There will be several workshops on the sidelines of the conference featuring internet media, media of Muslim minorities, and favorable media performance in crises, among others.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in an address to the opening ceremony criticized making accusations against Islam by some international media outlets and called it a great injustice to Islam and Muslims.
He called on Muslim media to strive to counter the attacks on Islam and urged them to promote the true picture of Islam as a religion that seeks peace and stability in human society.
