University of Exeter’s Professor of Arab and Islamic Studies underlined the role of Shia political thought in the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

Addressing the first Imam Khomeini (RA) International Festival on Thursday, January 23, Professor Robert Gleave said in Shia thought, there has been a combination of wisdom and religion and creation of new theories.

He underlined that Shia tradition and political thought is capable of providing answers to humanity’s 5000-year-old challenges and ideological needs.

The scholar noted that in the history of Western thought there has been much research conducted in the field of Islamic thought but the majority of Western studies have been about Sunni Islam.

He said Western scholars have realized that there are precious political theories in Shia jurisprudential thoughts as Shias use the element of intellect in their jurisprudential research.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Professor Gleave pointed to the differences between the Islamic Revolution of Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood Movement in Egypt, stating that the latter fall trap to foreign thoughts while the Islamic Revolution focused on the capacities of Shia thought.

He went on to say that many people in the world seek to know about Shia political thoughts and that efforts should be made to extend people’s knowledge about these thoughts.

Featuring Islam’s political thought, the first Imam Khomeini (RA) International Festival was held on Thursday in the holy city of Qom.
