The 28th National Quran Competition Underway in Nigeria

Vice- President Namadi Sambo flagged off the 28th edition of the National Quranic Recitation Competition on Friday in Dutse with a call on Islamic scholars to preach peace and unity in the country.


Declaring the week-long event open at the Malam Aminu Kano Triangle in the Jigawa state capital, Sambo said the competition serves as an avenue to promote the memorization of the Qur'an as well as fosters unity among the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.
He said the competition would improve the quality of learning of the Qur'an and other Islamic sciences, while uniting the youth in a healthy and peaceful atmosphere.
The vice president noted that the Federal Government has constructed about 100 almajiri schools that are equipped with state of the art facilities for both Islamic and Western education.
Sambo added that government has distributed about 96 million text books under the Universal Basic Education (UBE) program and to junior secondary schools.
He called on Islamic scholars to continue their good works while emphasizing peace and unity in their sermons.
The chairman of the occasion, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state said the competition is significant in the life of Muslims because the Qur'an is the source where the religion is derived, adding that it is the duty of parents to teach their children the holy book.
The chairman of the local organizing committee, Prof Haruna Wakili, said as part of the commitment of the state government to Islamic education, winners of the Qur'anic competition from 2008 have been on scholarship to Saudi Arabia,Egypt,Sudan and Malaysia for further studies.
Governor Sule Lamido thanked the organizers for giving Jigawa the second opportunity to host the competition, adding that the arms of the state are wide open to support Islamic causes at all time.
