An official from the Islamic Awqaf (Endowments) Department said additional groups are expected to enter the compound after noon prayers. 

"At least 584 occupiers stormed the mosque compound during the morning period through the Moroccan Gate in its western wall under police protection," the official told Anadolu, requesting anonymity.

Eyewitnesses reported that the incursions included Talmudic rituals, prayers and dancing, acts that violate the longstanding status quo at the Muslim holy site. Thursday marks the first day of a new month in the Hebrew calendar, a date when Israeli incursions into the mosque compound typically increase in frequency and scale.

Israel unilaterally began allowing settlers to storm the mosque compound in 2003, with incursions taking place daily except Fridays and Saturdays since that time. Al-Aqsa Mosque — the world's third-holiest site for Muslims — sits in East al-Quds, which Israel occupied during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and unilaterally annexed in 1980 in a move never recognized by the international community.
