Muslim scholars and thinkers should ensure Muslims are guided by Islam and the Quran former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad said.

He added that Islamic scholars must obtain the views of science and social behavior experts to back their stance against excessive liberalism.

According to Dr Mahathir, this is vital in explaining why excessive liberalism, including lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender issues, were wrong under Islamic teachings.
“It is incumbent upon Muslim scholars and thinkers to ensure Muslims are guided by Islam and the Quran, and not by charlatans with their own agendas,” he said in his keynote speech entitled “Civil-state Islamic perspective” at the Kuala Lumpur Summit 2014 on Tuesday, The New Straits Times reported.
The three-day event by the Malaysia-Turkey Friendship Foundation was held to gather Muslim intellectuals to analyse problems faced by Muslim communities and formulate solutions for them.
Dr Mahathir said the country needed fatwa (religious edicts) on the challenges faced by Muslims to decide which were acceptable.
“The fatwa should only be made after a prolonged study and debate from all disciplines with consideration for realities in modern life.”
Dr Mahathir also touched on the need for Muslims to devise strategies to deal with new ideologies that ran against Islamic teachings.
“In other words, you need to diagnose the ills that have befallen us and the aetiology (the cause). After that only should we take action.”
