In our Quranic and faith-based logic, knowledge, by its nature, brings commitment and responsibility, chancellor of Al-Mustafa International University said.
Addressing the opening ceremony of a specialized course titled “Intellect in the Quran and Islamic Civilization”, Ayatollah A’arafi added that in view of Islam and the Quran, every blessing from God makes one responsible before God, the society and oneself, but when it comes to knowledge, there is more emphasis on the responsibility and commitment that it brings.
He said according to Islam, when knowledge is accompanied with a number of characteristics and other forms of awareness, it is called Hikmat (wisdom) and intellect.
Ayatollah Aa’rafi said the first characteristic that turns knowledge into wisdom is linking the outside world with the inner world.
“There are a lot of discussions about this feature, as you know, but in view of the Quran and religious sources, knowledge, apart from its other effects, has a central and pivotal role, that is, linking us with the outside world.”
He said the second point is that knowledge is a Divine blessing and a precious jewel that comes from God, adding that knowledge is a truth that is manifested in humans from another world.
Knowledge emerges from humans’ bond with the supernatural world, the senior cleric noted.
Ayatollah Aa’arafi said the third point is that knowledge has various strata, layers and dimensions, beginning from empirical layers and leading to intuitive layers.
The relation between knowledge and other layers of human character, relation between knowledge and human behaviors, relation between knowledge and outside world, the inherent limitations of knowledge in discovering teh entire universe and its different angles, the inner and outer restrictions of knowledge, and the fact that knowledge brings commitment and responsibility were the other characteristics that turn knowledge into Hikmat, chancellor of Al-Mustafa International University pointed out.
He underlined that in addition to knowledge, Islam believes in Revelation, without which man cannot have access to many truths.
Ayatollah A’arafi went on to say that the points he mentioned formed an introduction to the topics due to be discussed by instructors during the course.
The “Intellect in the Quran and Islamic Civilization” course began in Tehran on Saturday, February 2, with the participation of scholars and thinkers from Iran and other countries.
