The competition, which is annually held in Cairo during the holy month of Ramadan, has been suspended due to internal conflicts in Egypt, Al-Yawm Al-Sabi daily reported.
Time limits and the ministry’s inability to make preparations for the contest have been cited as other reasons for cancelation of the event.
Every year representatives of over 70 countries took part in Egypt’s international Quran competition but this year only 25 countries, out of the 75 states invited, had accepted the invitation.
Most of the countries that had accepted the invitation to take part in the Ramadan Quran contest are in Africa.
Egypt plunged into violence after the country’s powerful military ousted Morsi, suspended the constitution, and dissolved the parliament on July 3.
The army declared chief justice of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mansour, as interim president on July 4.
Since then, Egypt has been the scene of rival rallies and clashes between thousands of the supporters and opponents of the ousted president.
