Governor of Najaf province, Adnan al-Zarfi, said the number of the pilgrims this year exceeded two million, Al-Alam news network reported.
Most of those visiting the holy shrine were Iraqi but there were also pilgrims from a number of other countries, including Iran.
Earlier, Iraq had deployed 25,000 security forces to ensure security for the pilgrims, especially given the current crisis caused by Takfiri terrorists in Iraq.
The 21st day of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which fell on July 8 this year, marks Imam Ali’s (AS) martyrdom anniversary.
Najaf, 160 km south of Baghdad, is visited by millions of Shia pilgrims from around the world every year.
