TEHRAN (IQNA) – Director of the Dar-ol-Quran Center of Kufa, Iraq, dismissed the claim raised by some Saudi officials that Iran has been politicizing the recent crush of Hajj pilgrims in Mina which left hundreds of pilgrims dead.

Sayyed Hamza al-Musawi al-Khufi told IQNA that the assertion is totally baseless as the Islamic Republic has always strived to develop good and constructive ties with its neighbors and the Muslim world countries.

He added that Saudi Arabia always tries to blame Iran for the problems it causes.

Al-Kufi further underlined that the management of Hajj rituals should be given to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as Riyadh is not capable of doing it properly.

He noted that most of those employed by the Saudis to run the Hajj affairs are from other countries.

The Iraqi Quranic figure urged all Muslim countries to put pressure on Riyadh to hand over the responsibility of running Hajj to the OIC.

The deadly crush of pilgrims occurred on September 11 in Mina, near the holy city of Makkah.

At least 465 Iranian nationals were among those who lost their lives in the incident.

Saudi Arabia claims nearly 770 people were killed in the crush, but officials with Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization say about 4,700 people,  died in the tragedy.

The incident came nearly two weeks after tens of Hajj pilgrims were killed in another tragic event in Makkah.

On September 11, a massive construction crane crashed into Makkah’s Grand Mosque in stormy weather, killing at least 107 people, including 11 Iranians, and injuring 201 others.

Saudi authorities have come under fire for their inability to ensure the safety of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who converge on Makkah every year.
