Egypt’s Awqaf ministry has recently banned Sheikh Mahmoud Shahat Anwar and Muhammad Yahya al-Sharqawi from reciting the Quran and taking part in activities and programs organized by the ministry in Egypt and other countries.
Their "crime” is said to be making visits to Iran and taking part in Quranic programs there.
The ministry had previously forbidden any trip without permission to Iran by the Arab country’s scholars, Quran reciters and prayer leaders.
Egyptian Awqaf Minister Mukhtar Guma has ordered an investigation into the two Qaris’ trips to Iran.
Hassan Rabiei regretted the restrictions, saying they run counter to human and religious rights.
He described the decision as politically motivated and said such moves only please the Zionist regime of Israel and Takfiri extremist groups.
Rabiei underlined that there are many common grounds and strong bonds between the Muslim nations of Iran and Egypt which will not be undermined by such decisions.
