TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iran’s Union of Quranic Institutes expressed condolences to Muslims over the martyrdom of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr.

The union in a statement condemned the cleric’s execution by the Saudi regime, describing it as an inhumane crime.

It said the atrocity further revealed the Saudi regime’s evil nature, adding that it would be the prelude to the collapse of the rule of oppressors.

The execution of Sheikh Nimr has drawn widespread international condemnation.

Saudi Arabia executed 47 prisoners on Saturday, including Sheikh Nimr, the Arab country’s interior ministry said in a statement.

Among them were four Shiite Muslims accused of anti-government protests in recent years.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was among those condemning the move, saying he is "deeply dismayed” by Saudi Arabia’s execution of the prominent Shia cleric.
