TEHRAN (IQNA) – A senior Iranian cleric underlined that the enemy sought to bring the Iranian nation to its knees by imposing sanctions on the country but failed to do so.

Addressing Friday prayers worshippers in Tehran yesterday, Ayatollah Kazem Sediqi underlined that the Iranian people did not surrender to enemy plots.

He said one of the enemy targets has been the country’s economy, noting that the foes try to use economic issues as a weapon against Iran.

That is why Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has put emphasis on Resistance Economy, the cleric added.

Ayatollah Khamenei in his new year message on March 20 named the new Iranian year of 1395 as the Year of Economy of Resistance: Action and Implementation.

"The main point (in this naming) is that the people of Iran should do something to liberate themselves from vulnerabilities in the face of the enemies’ threats and enmities. We should do something to avoid being vulnerable in the face of the enemies’ threats. We should reduce our vulnerability to zero,” the Leader said in the message.

Elsewhere in his Friday prayers sermon, Ayatollah Sediqi rejected the enemies’ opposition to Iran’s efforts to boost its defense capabilities, saying that the Holy Quran enjoins Muslims to be ready enough in terms of defense capabilities so that the foes do not dare to attack them.

His comments came after the US, France, Britain and Germany were reported to have called for a Security Council meeting to respond to Iran’s recent ballistic missile tests.

According to the reports, experts from the 15-nation body were expected to discuss Iran’s missile program on Friday to consider the possibility of a statement condemning it.

This is while Iran has insisted that its missile programs are part of its efforts to enhance the country’s defense power and vowed to continue developing ballistic missiles in the face of threats.
