TEHRAN (IQNA) – The 58th edition of the world’s oldest international Quran competition began in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur in a ceremony on Monday night.

According to IQNA dispatches, the opening ceremony of Malaysia’s international Quran contest, officially named "International Al Quran Recital and Memorisation Assembly”, was held at 8 P.M. local time with a number of officials, including the Southeast Asian country’s Religious Affairs Minister Jamil Khir bin Baharom, as well as envoys of different countries in attendance.

In an address, Baharom referred to Malaysia’s Quranic activities and said the country is proud to have trained more than 5900 memorizers of the Quran in 2015.

He said organizing 58 editions of the international Quran competition is a testimony to the country’s efforts to serve the Quran.

The minister added that the contest is also an effort aimed at enhancing unity and solidarity among Muslims.

Baharom went on to say that the international Quranic event is also aimed at promoting the culture of the Quran and contemplating the Holy Book in society.

120 Quran reciters and memorizers from 69 countries are attending the competition.

A 16-strong panel of judges comprising Quran experts from Lebanon, Qatar, Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Indonesia, Egypt, Thailand and Malaysia will supervise the contest.

Iran is represented in the recitation category of the contest by Seyed Mostafa Hosseini, who will go on the stage to show his Quran recitation talents on Wednesday.
