TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iranian official said applications have been registered in Iran for setting up 2,500 Moukebs in Iraq during the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Mohammad Sadeq Basiri, deputy governor of the southern province of Kerman, told reporters on Tuesday that 2,500 applications have been registered and the number is expected to rise to 2,800.

He added that Iranian Moubeks will be set up in Iran as well as on roads leading to Karbala, Samarra and Najaf in Iraq.

Moukebs are resting places with special facilities and services for pilgrims set up on roads during the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Arbaeen comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

In the past few years, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world took part in the mourning ceremonies in the Iraqi holy city marking Arbaeen.

Arbaeen will fall on Saturday, October 19 this year.

The number of Iranians in this year’s Arbaeen pilgrimage is expected to exceed 3 million.
