TEHRAN (IQNA) – Restrictions for pilgrims willing to visit the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad, northeast Iran, will remain in place until further notice, an official said.

Governor of Khorasan Razavi Province Ali Reza Razmhosseini said the decision to close the mausoleum to pilgrims has been a strategic issue aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus.

He also said that once the decision is made to reopen the mausoleum, it will take place in a gradual manner.

Holy Shia sites in Iran, including the shrines in Mashhad, Qom and Shiraz have been closed to visitors for weeks given the coronavirus outbreak.

I Iranian Health Ministry Spokesman Kianoosh Jahanpoor said on Tuesday that 98 deaths from the disease, known as COVID-19, were registered in the previous 24 hours.

He said the new deaths brought the total number of fatalities to 4,683 since the outbreak of the coronavirus in Iran in late February.

Jahanpoor added 1,574 new infections had been recorded over the past 24 hours, taking the overall number of confirmed cases to 74,877.
