TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iraq’s Sunni Awqaf (Endowments) Office said mass prayers will remain suspended in the country’s Sunni mosques.

The decision was made in a meeting of the members of the office, Shafaaq news website reported.

Chaired by Saad Kambash, head of the office, the meeting was attended by a number of Faqihs (jurisprudents) and representatives of Iraq’s Scholars Council as well as doctors and health experts.

It was decided that, given recommendations from the Supreme National Health Council and the Coronavirus Crisis Committee, congregational prayers should not be held until Eid al-Adha (August 1), the office said in a statement.

It added that after Eid, another meeting will be held to decide whether to resume mass prayers or not.

The office announced suspension of congregational prayers in mosques back in March in order to prevent spread of the coronavirus.

The novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, has infected more than 14.6 million people worldwide and killed some 610,000.

The number of confirmed cases in Iraq is 92,530 and 3,781 people have died from the disease in the country so far.
