TEHRAN ((IQNA) – More than 70 years have passed since the occupation of Palestine by the US-backed Zionist regime which has been committing the most obnoxious crimes against the defenseless Palestinian citizens.

The occupation of the Holy city of Al-Quds can be considered one of the most tragic events in the contemporary history of the Islamic world.

The constant repression and massacre of the Palestinians on the one hand, and the presence of an apartheid regime with evil agendas on the other, must attract the immediate attention of the international community and Islamic leaders.

At the time of the occupation of Palestine in 1948, Iran was ruled by the corrupt, pro-American and repressive Pahlavi regime. But even then, there was strong sympathy among the Iranian nation and, of course, prominent clerics, including the Late Imam Khomeini, toward the plight of Palestinians who were forced to leave their ancestral lands.

With the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the issue of supporting the Palestinian people who endure years of travesty, injustice and suffering at the hand of the Zionist occupiers was pursued quite seriously by Imam Khomeini.

Imam put forward a genus initiative according to which the last Friday of the Holy month of Ramadan was designated as the “International Quds Day”, in order to commemorate the immense sacrifices made by the Palestinian nation.

Moreover, Imam Khomeini’s bold proposal made the Palestinian people more aware of their inalienable rights and made them more determined to liberate their motherland.

One of the most serious measures taken by the Palestinians to fight against the Zionist oppression was staging the popular intifada or uprising.

No sooner than the beginning of Intifada, the Zionist regime became so desperate and hapless than what was expected in the face of heroic waves of the Palestinian revolution.

The Intifada has proved the power of the Palestinian masses and the armed resistance. Today, the Palestinian people are fervently hoping for a final victory and the fulfilment of their rights through armed struggle against the Zionist regime.
