The council will be set up to help Quran experts serving as arbiters in Quran contests and resolve their problems and issues, according to Qafqn.org website.

It will also organize programs, workshops, and specialized forums to enhance the members’ skills and expertise, said Sayed Sajjad al-Baaj, deputy head of the union.

He said the council will also grant official permissions and documents to those willing to serve as arbiters in local, national and international Quran contests.

The Union of Iraq’s Quranic Societies and Institutes is an umbrella organization supervising the activities of more than 280 Quranic societies and centers across the country.

Headed by Salih Khalad al-Dareiei, it annually organized several national Quran competitions and festivals.

Quranic activities have significantly developed in Iraq since the 2003 overthrow of former dictator Saddam Hussein.

There has been a growing trend of Quranic programs such as competitions, recitation sessions and educational programs held in the country in recent years.
