TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Union of Muslim Ulama (scholars) in Lebanon denounced a recent stabbing attack in Iran’s holy city of Mashhad that led to the martyrdom of a clergyman and wounding of two others.

In a statement, the union censured the attack by a follower of the great Satan (the US) in the holy month of Ramadan that is the month of compassion and mercy.

The desecration of the holy month of Ramadan in one of the houses of God shows again that Takfiri terrorist groups have nothing to do with Islam, it said.

The statement added that such measures are aimed at fomenting discord, creating sedition and undermining the axis of resistance.

The Union of Muslim Ulama also expressed condolences to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, the Iranian nation and the family of the martyr and hoped for quick recovery of the other two clerics wounded in the attack.

The stabbing attack took place on Tuesday at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in the northeastern city of Mashhad.

The assailant was arrested immediately after the attack, which took place at the courtyard of the holy shrine.

The injured clerics were transferred to the hospital after being stabbed with a knife.

The intelligence arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in the province said in a statement that the identity and nationality of the assailant have been determined.

It added that an investigation is underway to shed light on the incident, cautioning against any speculation before the results are out.

Mashhad’s Prosecutor General Mohammed Hossein Doroudi said four other people besides the attacker have been arrested in connection with the incident.
