TEHRAN (IQNA) – Afghanistan’s Union of Shia Muslim Scholars has strongly condemned the Tuesday stabbing attack at Imam Reza (AS) Shrine in Mashhad which led to the martyrdom of two clerics and the injury of another.

The stabbing attack took place on Tuesday at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in the northeastern city of Mashhad. The assailant was arrested immediately after the attack that targeted three clerics.

Hojat-ol-Islam Aslani succumbed to his wounds on the scene and was laid to rest on Thursdaay. Hojat-ol-Islam Daraei also passed away on Thursday in hospital.

Takfiri terrorists are trained in a manner that they do not adhere to any Madhhab and nation and do not recognize any sanctity, the Muslim union said in a statement on Thursday.

Such attacks aim to manifest Islam which is a religion of mercy and compassion as a “dark and horrifying” religion, he said.

It also slammed an attack by a grenade on Pul-e-Khisti mosque in Kabul which injured eight worshippers.

The intelligence arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in the province said in a statement that the identity and nationality of the assailant have been determined.

It added that an investigation is underway to shed light on the incident, cautioning against any speculation before the results are out.

Mashhad’s Prosecutor General Mohammed Hossein Doroudi said four other people besides the attacker have been arrested in connection with the incident.
