TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) has welcomed the resumption of diplomatic ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia, noting that the measure can help build unity in the Muslim world.

The two Muslim countries agreed to resume ties and re-open embassies after months of negotiations mediated in Iraq as well as days of intensive talks mediated by China. The rapprochement comes seven years after the two states severed ties over a series of issues.

In a statement on Monday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang described the rapprochement “as an initial step towards the unification” of the Muslim world.

Tehran-Riyadh relations were “affected by the interference and intrigue of interested parties who take advantage of it for their own profit,” he added.

“The restoration of this relationship is also expected to play an important role in stabilizing the geopolitical temperature in West Asia, especially the resolution of the conflict in Yemen, Syria, Lebanon and Libya,” he said, noting that it could also “strengthen the struggle to liberate the land of Palestine.”

“The Ummah and the Muslim World should also welcome this step while making it an example and role model in an effort to strengthen relations again to avoid prolonged disputes that harm the ummah as a whole,” added the head of PAS.

Wishing the relations between the two Muslim nations would continue to last, Awang also hoped that the measure would “become a starting point towards the unity and unification of the ummah.”
