TEHRAN (IQNA) – The foreign ministers of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation have hailed the recent agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to restore diplomatic relations.

They lauded the development as they met met in Nouakchott on Thursday to discuss security, terrorism and Islamophobia. This is the 49th session of the council of OIC foreign ministers and is entitled “Moderation is the Key to Security and Stability”.

During the opening of the meeting, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah said the Kingdom is hoping that the agreement would bolster Gulf and Arab security and stability and support collective Islamic work, according to Asharq al-Awsat.

“Saudi Arabia believes in the importance of the religious and neighborly ties that bind us. It always extends its hand to dialogue and resolving disputes through peaceful means,” he said.

He also hoped that "the agreement will bolster our security and stability and collective Islamic work."

After several days of intensive negotiations hosted by China, Iran and Saudi Arabia finally clinched a deal last Friday to restore diplomatic relations and re-open embassies and missions within two months.

According to a joint statement, Iran and Saudi Arabia highlighted the need to respect each others’ national sovereignty and refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of one another.

Iran, Saudi Arabia and China expressed their firm determination to make their utmost efforts to promote regional and international peace and security, it emphasized.

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran in January 2016 after Iranian protesters, enraged by the execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr by the Saudi government, stormed its embassy in Tehran.
