IQNA – Two terrorist explosions rocked the Kerman Martyrs Cemetery on Wednesday, killing at least 53 people and injuring 71 others, Iran's Emergency Organization announced.

The blasts occurred near the cemetery at around 15:00 local time during a memorial service for Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated by a US drone strike four years ago.

Rescue workers rushed to the scene to assist the victims as the death toll is expected to rise

Some sources claimed that the explosions were accidental, caused by gas capsules.

However, the deputy governor of Kerman province for security and political affairs termed the explosions as an act of terrorism.

Officials have called on the people to evacuate the cemetery.

Tasnim news agency cited unnamed sources as saying that two bomb-laden suitcases which were detonated by remote control caused the explosions.

According to IRNA, the first explosion occurred some 700 meters from the grave of General Soleimani and the second one about one kilometer away.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the terrorist attacks.
