Hojat-ol-Islam Haj-Abolghasem Doolabi, a prominent Quran memorizer and member of the Assembly of Experts, made the remarks while addressing the 19th Specialized Session of Distinguished Quranic Scholars, Qaris, and Memorizers, held by the Supreme Council of the Quran in Tehran last week.
He emphasized the critical role of Quran reciters in delivering the divine message, highlighting key attributes that make their recitations impactful. Speaking at a recent event, he said:
"With reference to verse 39 of Surah Al-Ahzab, the luminous verses of the Quran are the best tools of communication. A qari must fulfill their mission in alignment with the divine goal of propagating the Quran through a pleasant voice."
Citing the example of Mus‘ab ibn Umair, an early Islamic figure, Haj-Abolghasem noted that he embodied the ideal of a qari-missionary. "When the Ansar requested the Prophet to send someone to teach them, he found no one more suitable than Mus‘ab, who used Quranic recitation as a powerful tool for da'wah," he explained.

The cleric stressed the importance of recognizing the Quran's greatness, asserting that this awareness must precede other skills such as vocal excellence. "The Quran is a vast blessing, one that ensures the prosperity and leadership of the Muslim community,” he said, noting that a qari must internalize this truth before attempting to share it.
The cleric emphasized sincerity as a core quality for qaris, stating, "They must dedicate themselves to this sacred path without seeking financial gain, akin to the prophets who never demanded rewards for spreading the faith. However, practical support from public funds is necessary to meet their basic needs."
He also highlighted the importance of piety, humility, and modesty. "A qari must embody the teachings of the Quran and avoid arrogance stemming from their popularity," he added.

Addressing the external presentation, he called for qaris to maintain appropriate attire suitable for their role. "There was a plan to design formal attire for Quran reciters at public events, but it has yet to materialize," he said, urging authorities to revisit the initiative.
The scholar further underlined the significance of Quran memorization. Referring to the late Sheikh Shahat Muhammad Anwar’s teachings, he said: "An effective qari must also be a memorizer. This enables them to focus on conveying the Quran's meanings rather than being preoccupied with pronunciation."
