In a statement issued Sunday, the governorate said leaked footage shows Israeli forces carrying out underground digging at the major Muslim place of worship.
It claimed the excavations were destroying artifacts from the Umayyad period, which it described as “living proof and conclusive evidence of the Muslims' rightful ownership of the site.”
The statement further argued that Israel’s actions were aimed at “erasing the historical identity of Al-Aqsa and falsifying the facts in favor of the alleged ‘Temple Mount’ narrative.”
According to the governorate, the works are being conducted without transparency or international supervision and could undermine the mosque’s structural foundations.

Palestinian officials said these efforts are part of broader attempts “to impose new facts on the ground to serve its plans to Judaize the city.”
They urged the international community, the United Nations, and UNESCO “to intervene immediately to stop these violations and hold the occupation accountable.”
Palestinians have long reported the occupation's tunneling under Al-Aqsa as part of a strategy to alter the character of East Al-Quds.

Under international law, the Jordan-run Jerusalem Endowment Council has sole authority over the affairs of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Israel has controlled East Al-Quds since occupying it in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and annexed the area in 1980, a move not recognized internationally.
