IQNA – The holy city of Najaf in Iraq is hosting a scholarly conference this week on the occasion of the Najaf Seminary’s millennium.

The Scientific and Preparatory Committee of a scholarly conference to be held on February 11-12, 2026, on the occasion of the Najaf Seminary’s millennium.

 

The event, to be held under the theme of “The Legacy of Sheikh Tusi in Islamic and Western Thought; Contemporary Approaches”, will bring together scholars to discuss the lasting position of this great figure of jurisprudence and theology.

According to Al-Kafeel, the first preliminary scientific conference on the occasion of the Najaf Seminary’s millennium will be organized under the auspices of the Astan (custodianship) of Hazrat Abbas (AS) holy shrine.

“Najaf Seminary; A Thousand Years of Giving and Service” is the title of the conference, slated for February 11 and 12, 2026.

According to the organizers, this conference is part of the extensive programs to revive the scientific heritage of the Najaf Seminary and is aimed at reviewing the historical and civilizational role of Sheikh Tusi in the formation of Islamic thought and his influence on contemporary studies in the Islamic world and the West.

In this conference, researchers and professors of the seminary and university will present papers, examine Sheikh Tusi's scientific achievements, and analyze his position in the development of jurisprudence, Usul, theology, and comparative studies.

The organizers have emphasized that this event is an introduction to a series of scientific and cultural programs that have been prepared to mark the thousandth anniversary of the Najaf Seminary in the coming years.

This conference, which coincides with the anniversary of the arrival of Sheikh Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Tusi to this holy city in 448 AH, provides an opportunity to highlight the civilizational and scientific role of Najaf and its blessed seminary and to shed light on its historical and cultural contribution to the Islamic Ummah.

The Scientific and Preparatory Committee of this conference organized a meeting to review the final arrangements for this event, which will be held in cooperation with the Institute of Shia Studies in Canada and Al-Kafeel University.

In this meeting, the organizational and academic mechanisms of the conference were reviewed.

The personality of Sheikh Tusi and his scientific legacy as one of the most prominent figures of Islamic thought is among the themes of the conference.

It will also highlight the religious sciences that flourished at that stage, and the historical and intellectual contexts that accompanied his stay in Najaf, and the qualitative change this brought about in the path of the scientific movement in Najaf.
